Danish Crown has invested in one of the UK’s most advanced bacon production facilities, bringing together eleven highly automated Weber lines at its site in Rochdale, Greater Manchester. Supported by Interfood Technology, the integrated solution covers the process from product preparation and precise slicing through to automated handling and packaging.
The new facility represents a major commitment to the UK bacon market and provides Danish Crown with the capacity, consistency and efficiency required for large-scale production. Rather than viewing each industrial slicing machine or packaging system separately, the project was approached as one complete production process, with every element designed to work together.
The result is a highly automated operation capable of producing consistently presented packs of stacked back bacon, while helping to maximise yield, minimise giveaway and maintain dependable product quality.
A long heritage in the UK bacon market
Danish Crown’s connection with the UK stretches back to 1887, when Danish bacon first began making its way to British consumers. Today, the farmer-owned company is one of the world’s largest meat exporters and one of Europe’s leading pork producers, with control of its supply chain from farm through to the finished product.
This integrated approach gives Danish Crown a strong foundation for traceability, food safety and quality control. As customer and retailer expectations continue to develop, the company has also continued to invest in modern processing technology and additional UK production capacity.
When the Rochdale project was originally announced, Danish Crown committed more than £100 million to the 30,500 square metre facility. The site was designed to slice and pack more than 900 tonnes of bacon and gammon each week once fully operational, while creating around 300 specialised jobs.
Delivering a factory of this scale required more than simply selecting a bacon cutting machine, slicer or packaging system. Danish Crown needed a coordinated solution capable of maintaining reliable product flow and portion quality across multiple high-output lines.
Eleven lines designed as one complete process
At the heart of Danish Crown’s Rochdale operation are eleven highly automated lines from Weber Food Technology, covering product preparation, precise bacon slicing, automated handling and packaging.
This complete-line approach is essential in high-volume bacon production. A high-speed food slicing machine can only deliver its full potential when products are prepared correctly and downstream equipment can receive each portion without interruption.
Variations in product shape, temperature and composition can affect slicing performance. Without effective coordination between preparation, slicing, transport and packaging, manufacturers risk inconsistent portions, excessive giveaway, poor pack presentation and unnecessary stoppages.
By engineering each stage as one connected process, Weber and Interfood have created a smoother, more predictable product flow from preparation through to the finished pack.
Precision slicing, automation and yield
Yield is a major consideration when specifying an industrial bacon slicer. Even small amounts of excess weight in each retail pack can create significant costs across high production volumes.
Weber slicing technology combines accurate portioning, high throughput and consistent presentation. Aligned preparation and slicing parameters help Danish Crown use raw material efficiently, control giveaway and maintain the quality of its stacked back bacon.
The Weber slicing machines operate within a wider automated system that coordinates product movement, portion formation and packaging. Careful handling protects the presentation created at the slicer while reducing manual intervention.
Weber loading automation and product transport technology connect each stage, moving sliced portions efficiently towards packaging. Coordinated conveyor speeds, controls and transfer points help maintain precision between the blade and the finished pack.
Integrating preparation, slicing, automation and packaging also makes line performance easier to manage. Operators can assess how each stage affects overall efficiency, yield and presentation, rather than treating every bacon machine as a separate process.
Efficient and responsible production
Efficiency at Rochdale extends beyond output. Danish Crown designed the facility to reduce energy use, food waste and packaging waste.
The site was planned to use renewable electricity, with recovered heat contributing to office heating and hot water. Ammonia refrigeration was selected to reduce the environmental impact of cooling.
Suitable bacon offcuts can also be redirected into products such as sausages, while a circular packaging system for incoming pork deliveries helps reduce disposable packaging.
These measures complement the yield benefits of the Weber food slicing equipment. Controlling giveaway and using more of each product delivers commercial savings while supporting the efficient use of meat, energy, packaging materials and production time.
Partnership from planning to production
A project involving eleven automated lines requires more than capable equipment. It also demands detailed knowledge of bacon production, product behaviour and the interaction between each stage of the process.
Interfood worked alongside Weber and Danish Crown, contributing UK market knowledge and practical experience of integrated slicing and packaging applications. The aim was to meet immediate production requirements while creating a reliable platform for future growth.
Danish Crown summarises the importance of this collaboration clearly: “A partnership with such a degree of industry expertise is crucial for us.”
The relationship continues beyond the initial equipment investment. Technical support, servicing, spare parts, training and ongoing line optimisation are vital in a facility where the performance of multiple connected machines determines overall productivity.
A platform for UK bacon production
Danish Crown’s Rochdale facility provides a modern platform for producing high-quality, traceable bacon at scale. Its eleven Weber lines demonstrate the benefits of planning preparation, slicing, automation and packaging as one process, including consistent portions, controlled giveaway, improved presentation and more efficient use of raw materials.
For manufacturers considering Weber slicing machines, the project highlights the importance of looking beyond an individual bacon cutting machine. Whether the requirement is a standalone industrial bacon slicer or a complete automated slicing and packaging line, the best results come from understanding how every stage affects the finished pack.
Through the combined experience of Interfood and Weber, manufacturers across the UK and Ireland can access complete slicing solutions tailored to their products, volumes and future ambitions.
